FAQ

  • A term used to describe vegetation management and building materials used on or near a home or structure to resist the intrusion of embers or flames produced by a wildland fire. It can be applied to new construction or for retrofitting an older home.

  • WUI stands for Wildland urban Interface, which is the area where human development meets undeveloped wildland. This includes areas where homes are close to forests, brush, or grass.

    • California has the highest number of WUI housing units.

    Why is WUI important?

    • WUI areas are at higher risk for wildfires.

    WUI building codes

    • WUI areas have more restrictive codes and standards for building construction.

  • The California Building Commission adopted the Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI) codes in late 2005

The majority of the requirements took effect in 2008.

These standards apply to buildings constructed after January 1, 2008 and located in a designated Fire Hazard Severity Zone or any Wildland-Urban Interface Fire Area. The vast majority of the Sierra Nevada mountain community's are in these designated areas. Although older buildings are not required to be retrofitted per the current standards these construction practices can be implemented to help improve the fire resistance of the structures on your property.
