The California Building Commission adopted the Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI) codes in late 2005
The majority of the requirements took effect in 2008.
These standards apply to buildings constructed after January 1, 2008 and located in a designated Fire Hazard Severity Zone or any Wildland-Urban Interface Fire Area. The vast majority of the Sierra Nevada mountain community's are in these designated areas. Although older buildings are not required to be retrofitted per the current standards these construction practices can be implemented to help improve the fire resistance of the structures on your property.
